September 25 marks World Pharmacist Day, a global recognition of the important role pharmacists play in supporting patients and contributing to better health experiences throughout their care journeys.

At Pfizer Canada, we recognize pharmacists not only as medication experts but as trusted frontline healthcare providers who are often the first point of contact for Canadians seeking care.

Whether it's a quick consultation at the pharmacy counter or ongoing support for chronic conditions, pharmacists are often the most frequent and accessible healthcare professionals Canadians interact with. This day is an opportunity to honour their contributions and elevate the conversation around their evolving role in patient care.
Canada’s Pharmacists: A Constant in Everyday Care
With over 45,000 licensed pharmacists across Canada, these professionals are embedded in nearly every community—from urban centres to remote regions—making them one of the most accessible healthcare providers in the country.

According to the Canadian Pharmacists Association, 95% of Canadians live within 5 km of a pharmacy, and many rely on pharmacists for timely advice, medication management, and increasingly, clinical services.

Canadian pharmacists dispense or provide advice on approximately 750 million prescriptions per year—whether through consultations, medication reviews, or clinical services.

This staggering volume of engagement highlights just how central pharmacists are to the everyday health decisions Canadians make.
In fact:
  • 32% of Canadians consult their pharmacist at 2-3 times a month.
  • Over 96% trust pharmacists as a reliable source of health information.
  • More than 77% of Canadians say they would visit a pharmacist before a doctor for minor health concerns
These numbers speak volumes. Pharmacists are not just convenient—they are integral to the everyday health decisions Canadians make. From answering questions about over-the-counter medications to helping manage complex treatment regimens, their presence is a cornerstone of community health.
Expanding Roles, Expanding Impact

The role of pharmacists has evolved dramatically in recent years. No longer limited to dispensing medication, they now offer a wide range of clinical services that directly impact patient outcomes and reduce strain on other parts of the healthcare system.

Today, pharmacists in most provinces can:

  • Prescribe for minor ailments, saving patients time and reducing unnecessary clinic visits.
  • Administer vaccines, including flu, COVID-19, and travel immunizations.
  • Manage chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, and hypertension.
  • Provide smoking cessation support and mental health counselling.

These expanded capabilities mean pharmacists are now playing a proactive role in preventive care and chronic disease management. They are supporting patients in managing their health more effectively—and doing so with empathy, expertise, and efficiency.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Pharmacist Visit

Pharmacists are here to help—but many patients don’t realize just how much support they can offer.

Here are a few ways to make the most of your next visit:

  • Bring a list of all medications and supplements you’re taking to help avoid interactions.

  • Ask questions about side effects, dosage, and timing.

  • Request a medication review if you’re managing multiple prescriptions.

  • Inquire about vaccinations and preventive care services available at your pharmacy.

  • Discuss lifestyle changes that may support your treatment plan.

These simple steps can help build a relationship with your pharmacist, leading to more personalized care and better support throughout your treatment journey.

On this World Pharmacist Day, we celebrate the dedication, compassion, and expertise of pharmacists across Canada. Whether it’s helping a patient understand their treatment, administering important vaccines, or offering a listening ear, pharmacists are essential partners in our healthcare system. Let’s take a moment to thank the pharmacists in our lives—and continue to support their evolving role in shaping a healthier future for all Canadians.
