When Curtis interviewed for a role at Pfizer Canada in oncology, he was asked a question that stuck with him: “What brings you joy?” It’s a question rooted in one of Pfizer’s core values—JOY—and Curtis’s answer was immediate and heartfelt.
“I shared how the Friends for Life Bike Rally does just that,” he says. “Each summer, I cycle 600 km from Toronto to Montreal. It’s not a race—it’s a journey of joy, purpose, and community. We ride, we laugh, we raise funds for those living with HIV/AIDS. I feel my best self with this group—authentic, connected, and proud to be part of something bigger.”
Curtis is one of many Pfizer colleagues who bring their whole selves to work—and beyond. His story is part of our #PfizerVolunteers series, which celebrates the passions and causes our colleagues support in their personal time.
The Friends for Life Bike Rally is a six-day, 600-kilometre cycling event that raises funds for organizations supporting people living with HIV/AIDS. Riders like Curtis train for months and commit to fundraising goals, all while balancing their professional and personal lives. The funds raised go to three vital organizations: ACCM (AIDS Community Care Montreal), Trellis HIV and Community Care in Kingston, and theToronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA). Each plays a critical role in providing education, support, and advocacy for individuals affected by HIV/AIDS in their communities.
For Curtis, the rally is more than a physical challenge—it’s a deeply personal and liberating experience. “Most of my life, I was in the closet about being gay,” he shares. “It’s so freeing to be with others where I don’t have to self-censor or keep my guard up. We laugh, we connect, and we support each other. It’s like ‘gay summer camp’—a space where I can be my authentic self.”
Curtis’s story is a reminder that joy can be found in the most meaningful of places: in community, in purpose, and in being true to oneself. It’s also a testament to the power of volunteerism and the impact one person can make when they follow their passion.
As Curtis gears up for another summer on the road, we’re proud to share his story and cheer him on. Wishing you a safe and joyful ride, Curtis!
