With the cold, late spring, you may have delayed the purchase of
protection against parasites for your dog. It's not too late to visit your
veterinarian for a one-touch solution, especially if you are taking your dog on
vacation.
"Veterinary medical association surveys show that the majority of dog owners take their pets on vacation," says Keith McGriskin, Marketing Manager, Companion Animal Health for Pfizer. "Travelling to new locales may expose your pet to a variety of new parasites, such as heartworm, fleas and sarcoptes mange. We are encouraging dog owners to contact their veterinarian for advice before leaving on holidays." Mosquitoes transmit heartworm, a serious parasite that can block blood flow, damage the lungs and cause other health problems in dogs. If you are traveling to cottage country where exposure to mosquitoes is very likely, heartworm protection for your dog is advised. Fleas are a constant concern, especially if you are settling into a cottage or cabin that has not been recently used. Your presence will stimulate dormant fleas to come to life, feasting on you and your pet. Remember, although flea populations don't usually peak until August or September, now is the time to begin treatment. Coyotes and fox are common sources of sarcoptic mange. Walking your dog in suburban areas, especially newly constructed ones that border coyote or fox habitat mean that your dog could become infested by this parasite. The microscopic mites tunnel into the dog's skin to live and lay eggs causing an uncomfortable skin condition characterized by severe itching. This highly contagious skin disease can be transmitted easily to other dogs, cats and even humans. Sudden itching, scratching around the face, ears, chest, legs, elbows or hocks; hair loss in affected areas; small bumps on the skin or crusty, yellow scabs are all indicators of possible mange infestation. Your veterinarian can advise on the appropriate protection for your dog.
