Kirkland, November 10, 2010 - Pfizer Canada is renewing its nearly 60-year presence in Canada and Quebec by investing $22 million for a major rebuilding of its Canadian headquarters in Kirkland, Quebec.
"This significant investment represents Pfizer's commitment to maintaining its leadership role in the vital biopharmaceutical industry in Quebec," said Paul Lévesque, President of Pfizer Canada. "Quebec has historically provided a favourable environment in which the industry has flourished, and this investment is yet another example of the benefits of those policies."
The new investment involves a complete reconstruction of the original building on Pfizer's Kirkland campus and the upgrade of facilities and equipment currently used daily by more than 600 employees. The office redesign will permit the consolidation of all Canadian Biopharmaceutical and Animal Health head office colleagues under one roof, adding over 100 employees to the campus. The renovations will allow for improved meeting spaces, work stations and common areas. The cafeteria and other amenities will also undergo a significant upgrade. Green building elements have also been incorporated during the construction and in the final design.
The extensive renovation work is already under way and is to be completed by March 2011. The work has created employment for approximately 100 people in the Quebec construction industry alone.
Pfizer Canada has been headquartered in Montreal since its founding in 1953 and moved to its current site in Kirkland in 1975. Over the past decade, Pfizer has globally had three mergers with other major pharmaceutical companies. Each time Montreal was chosen as the location for the Pfizer Canada headquarters, resulting in several previous expansions in Kirkland.
Last May, it was also announced that Pfizer Global Manufacturing would maintain the operations of its Montreal plant, formerly part of Wyeth, as part of a major restructuring of the company's global plant network, preserving over 1,000 jobs at that facility in Ville Saint-Laurent.
"Quebec's biopharmaceutical industry is distinguished by the quality of its manpower and research, and especially by the excellence of the companies that operate in this strategic sector for the Quebec economy. The Quebec government is therefore making every effort to create an environment conducive to this industry's growth. The investment that Pfizer announced today is strengthening the company's activities and is therefore contributing to the vitality of this industry in Quebec," said Clément Gignac, Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade.
"We are pleased to see investments such as Pfizer's that demonstrate faith in the future of this activity, not just for economic development but also to help the health of our citizens through their innovative discoveries," said the Hon. Denis Lebel, Minister of State for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec.
Pfizer is an important contributor to Quebec's economy, employing nearly 2,100 Quebecers at its headquarters in Kirkland, its manufacturing and distribution centre in Montreal, as well as its research and development facilities in Montreal. It is the largest pharmaceutical company in Quebec, in terms of employment.
